Melange 2010
14/09/2010
Melange '10 is the annual media fest organized by Jain University's Department of Communication and Media Studies.
Just like the human mind, media is a complex set of reality on one hand and a distorted image on the other. While the human mind can be studied in psychological terms, communication theorists have, for many years, tried to fathom this phenomenon called media.
By far, media has been the most influential entity on the masses, surpassing even the Beatles-mania! As for communication theorists, they have helped us understand media to a certain extent through theories of Magic Bullet, Hypodermic Needle, Limited Paradigm Effects and so on. Media today thrives on manipulation and slanting of news. In Marshall McLuhan’s words, “All media exist to invest our lives with artificial perceptions and arbitrary values.”
With Mélange ’10, as media students, we candidly attempt to differentiate between the 2 faces of media that we see. One, an ardent portrayal of reality; another, a beacon of light gone astray.
Mirror – Mirage makes this aspect of media its base, with Mirror reflecting reality as it is and Mirage happens when media manipulates reality out of commercial and political interests.
Mélange ’10 is an effort to analyze, interpret and spread the word to the masses about the present state of media. It is an endeavour for the betterment of media, an effort to bring about a revolution in the media world – a quest for a media that mirrors reality.
